To prevent erosion make a rock bed around the end of the tube. Each drain field trench should be at least 3 to 4 feet wide and 3 to 4 feet deep. While all septic tank drain fields require regular inspection you can save a lot of money by digging one yourself. Step 1 choose your site.

The perforated pipe in a gravity drain field has no slope end to end and has capped ends. The field should be at least 10 feet away from your edible garden and any water such as a lake river or well. Screw a drain cover over the end of the tubing as it approaches daylight to keep critters out. Drain field replacement can cost anywhere from 2 000 to 10 000.

Where the tube passes by the downspout from the gutter we installed a y fitting and drained the roof water from the gutter system directly into the main drainage line. You will want to choose a site that is away from the house but close to the tank. The first sign of a problem with drain field is often a swampy area in the yard or an odor of sewage on the property. The drain or leach field is the section of the septic system that transports the waste water back to the soil.
